TB2 and TB1 will interoperate using the same cable. The Pegasus series are excellent products, which is why so many people use them. On top of it all, I want to make my purchase before the end of the Australian Tax Year at June 30. I am going to try to find out more about a small Jellyfish.

BEST SOFTRAID 2017 UPGRADE

I fully intend to upgrade to the newly announced iMac Pro, probably in 1st quarter 2018 - ones initial problems had been identified and ironed out.ĭecided to put on hold the purchase of the SSDs, as a large Pegasus2 would give SSD type speed with HDDs, which makes the SSD purchase redundant. Apple in Australia sells the Promise, which may mean that I can try one for 14 days keep or return. Promise Pegasus2 R8 would give virtually SSD equivalent speed and is FCPX compatible, but I can't find one with no HDDs, which means that I can't re-deploy existing drives and have to pay for new ones. I fear that it is better suited for corporate use/wallet! Lumaforge Jellyfish seems to be the best of breed, however I still can't get info about it's suitability for a 1-man operation and pricing. QNAP 1282T3 If this could be made to store FCPX Libraries, it would seem the most versatile, as it offers TB3 and 10Gb/sec, but if I can't use it for FCPX Libraries, then there is little point in buying it. I have reached out to Bob Zelin, but hadn't heard back as yet. The Pegasus is a little quieter than the Thunderbay 4, but the sound doesn't bother me.Ĭomplex subject, seemingly. Using RAID-5 via SoftRAID, they are just as fast and it avoids a proprietary lock-in to a specific hardware RAID format. The list of officially approved drives pretty restrictive, but others will probably work.Īfter using the Thunderbay series, I overall like those better than the Promise Pegasus. However you normally use > 128KB and anybody who deals with complex video editing can figure out the Promise utilities. Here are some tests I did of sync rate (IOW restripe time) of various R4 systems: /photos/i-pdz6p2j/0/632a78ee/O/i-pdz6p2j.jpg The admin utilities are a little complex, and the time to restripe a RAID-5 array at 128KB or smaller is slow. The Promise Pegasus units are good - very quiet and well made. If anyone needs network-attached storage, Lumaforge is the way to go for FCPX.

BEST SOFTRAID 2017 HOW TO

This is one reason why the Lumaforge products are so good - they have figured out the unique I/O characteristics of FCPX and how to prefetch, cache or otherwise optimize serving those. I haven't inspected the multicam I/O profile but it also could be different. Then the disk subsystem becomes limited by I/Os per second, not megabytes per second. When using the Event Browser in filmstrip mode on large libraries, the I/O pattern changes to small (8k or so) random I/Os. Video editing often requires rapid large sequential I/Os, but not always - especially with FCPX.

Speed test software doesn't test editing multicams, multiple live media streams, etc. If you’ve never heard of SoftRAID (or OWC), check out the site’s About section-SoftRAID’s been around since 1996 and, the people behind the software “eat, sleep and dream Macintosh and disk drives.” Sounds good to me, but download the free trial and check it out for yourself.

BEST SOFTRAID 2017 FULL VERSION

You can find a 30-day free trial version here, and the full version can be purchased at the SoftRAID store. The full application costs $179 ($89 upgrade price for users of SoftRAID 4), with one year of free email tech support the Lite version costs a mere $49, with support via online forums. The Lite version supports RAID 0 and RAID 1, while the full version supports RAID 0, 1, 4, 5 and 1+0.

BEST SOFTRAID 2017 MAC OS X

And those are just the highlights of the upgrade.Ĭompatible with Mac OS X 10.6.8-10.12, SoftRAID is available in a Lite version as well as a full-featured application. You’ll also get email notification of errors. The latter means that SoftRAID now checks and monitors most USB drives (USB 3/3.1 and “many” USB 2 drives), FireWire enclosures and FireWire 400/800 drives. In addition to Easy Setup and quick start guides, the new version supports Thunderbolt 3 devices and SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis Reporting Technology) over USB proprietary driver. The software also makes recommendations to help ease you through setup and it automates disk configuration. 5.6 from OWC adds Easy Setup Guides that take you step-by-step through the process so you don’t have to be a tech wizard. While not quite as intense of a debate as, say, Nikon versus Canon or DSLR versus mirrorless, there are plenty of online discussions weighing the benefits and drawbacks of both options.īut if you’re looking for RAID software for Mac, or just want to try it out (an excellent option before making a costly investment in hardware), the latest version of SoftRAID may be your best bet, especially if you’re a first-timer. Hardware RAID or software RAID? That’s the main question you’ll have to answer after deciding to set up a system that protects your data.
